Over 200 species of our raw and base materials are grown in our own biodynamic® medicinal plant gardens. The remainder of our raw materials are sourced worldwide from small and large farms, cooperatives, cultivation projects and trade companies.
By building and maintaining a network of trust with our suppliers, we fulfill our consumer promise to use ingredients from—to the greatest extent possible—biodynamic® and organic cultivation. In order to involve our suppliers in reaching our goals, we make every effort to stay in continued contact with each of them.
Naturally, we depend on sourcing our raw materials and services at a reasonable and economically viable price. Nevertheless, we are convinced that a fair price that is acceptable to both sides of the partnership results in long-term cooperation, mutual trust and respect. In addition, both parties are then independent of speculative market fluctuations. As we work together and learn from each other, we also develop top quality together. This creates a win-win situation. The supplier is guaranteed purchase of its raw materials and Weleda has an assured supply. Price stability, consistent quality and the exchange of expertise therefore result.
A large proportion of our raw materials come from sustainable projects housed around the world. These partnerships have been jointly established with a long-term perspective. Additional supplies that cannot be procured in this way are purchased through contract cultivation and trade.
What is Fair Trade?
Fair Trade is an inherent component of Weleda’s philosophy and practices. Over the past 85-years, Weleda has molded the definition of modern-day Fair Trade. To Weleda, “Fair Trade” means “global wellbeing” and involves partnering with ingredient cultivators throughout the world to support the area’s ecological, economical, educational and social environments. Such endeavors improve both the quality of the farmer’s land and crops, as well as the quality of Weleda’s end formulations. Weleda works with local farmers, helping them to convert their conventional farms into sustainable, organic agriculture. This dedicated process provides educational support in ecological and sustainable harvesting practices, as well as monetary support for necessary supplies and equipment. In addition, Weleda establishes a guaranteed quantity of crops that it will purchase each year from these partners in order to provide their local communities with a stable economic structure. Such practices uphold Weleda's founding virtue, "In harmony with nature and the human being."
